Budget means little to Bajans

ONCE UPON A TIME in Barbados, there were two words that made Bajans stand up and take notice.

Budget Day. And it wasn’t just all about the politics.

Yes, it was Government’s opportunity to present the path it had charted for the country from a financial perspective, but the day itself had a measure of symbolism that dated back decades, highlighted by hundreds making the trek to the precincts of Parliament to get in on the action.

But these days, that’s not the case, as Barbadians have a completely different feel for the Budget, officially called the Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals. (BA)
