CANADA IS ENCOURAGING BARBADOS to change its stance on the criminalisation of same-sex relations and to engender greater tolerance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities.
Canadian High Commissioner Marie Legault yesterday suggested the time had come for the island to follow Canada’s lead and decriminalise same-sex conduct, combat violence and discrimination that target lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender people, and support the work of grassroots LGBTQ2 organisations.
She said Canada believed all countries should commit to these three things “at a minimum”.
As International Day Against Homophobia was celebrated worldwide, Legault outlined her country’s position on the subject to an audience at the High Commission where the gay pride flag, also known as the rainbow flag, went on display. (GC)
