THERE IS NO “HARD DATA” on whether the tax on sweetened drinks has been successful.
In addition, it could be months before any ban on the sale of sugary snacks on school premises comes into effect.
This was revealed by Minister of Health John Boyce to the DAILY NATION after he addressed a Pan-American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (WHO) Caribbean sub-regional workshop on alcohol, tobacco and sugar-sweetened beverages at the Accra Hotel on Tuesday. It brought together 39 participants from 17 countries.
In his address to the opening of the two-day workshop, Boyce once again said his ministry was preparing a set of policy options to address the marketing of unhealthy foods to children while they were at school. He added consideration was being given to banning the sale or promotion of sugar-sweetened beverages on school premises. (HLE)
