NASSAU – Parliamentary commissioner Charles Albury officially confirmed that former Prime Minister Perry Christie lost his seat to the Free National Movement’s (FNM) candidate by four votes during Wednesday’s general election.
According to Albury, when voting was completed early Friday, the FNM’s Reece Chipman secured 1 909 votes to Christie’s 1 905 with others receiving 197 and one protest ballot.
The Tribune newspaper reported that given the closeness of the poll, Christie and his Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) have the option to challenge the result in the Election Court.
Christie, a veteran politician who has held the seat since 1977, was swept out of power by a landslide as the FNM won 35 seats to four.
Meanwhile the other political party to contest the polls – the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) failed to win any seats, however, party leader Branville McCartney says his future at its helm will be determined by party executives.
“There will be a meeting in the week that will determine how we as a party move forward,” McCartney said after he led the DNA unsuccessfully in a second consecutive election.
The DNA contested 35 of the 39 constituencies on Wednesday. (CMC)
