Mixed views on number of heroes

AS THE ISLAND CELEBRATES the 19th anniversary of the naming of the Ten National Heroes, a noted historian says they have become boring simply because too many were named at one time.

Trevor Marshall, a retired lecturer in history at the Barbados Community College, said the island should have done like Jamaica and started small and, over time, built up anticipation, momentum and excitement with the naming of one or two every few years.

He likened the announcement of the ten at one time in 1998 to a bombardment.

“Even for persons like myself who teach history and research history, the large number – ten at one time – is a hard number to swallow.”
