THE UNITED NATIONS Committee on the Rights of the Child has renewed its call for Barbados to ban flogging, but local authorities are asking for understanding on ending its use in the home.

The recommendation was among twelve that the committee, an independent body, made to Barbados after consideration of the second periodic report submitted by Barbados on its implementation of the International Convention On The Rights Of The Child

A team of officials led by Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett, and including Child Care Board officials and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) children’s champion for Barbados, Faith Marshall-Harris, attended the meeting in Geneva.

In relation to flogging, Barbados submitted that there was still a “strong cultural attitude in favour of corporal punishment”.
