GOVERNOR GENERAL Sir Elliott Belgrave has launched the Elliott & Loretta Belgrave Scholarship Trust with the aim of providing financial assistance in five not-so common areas.
Sir Elliott is about to demit office after five years and having toured scores of primary schools in his capacity of Governor General, said he was inspired to contribute to the education of Barbadians.
As a result the trust has selected the areas of accounting, marine engineering, architecture, laws of the seas and legislative drafting at the University of the West Indies campuses and Barbados Community College to give assistance to those students.
“We are not doing everything. You would have noticed I did not mention law or medicine because I believe we are adequately served in those areas. We are looking at subjects which are different and which are rare,” Sir Elliott stated today at Government House.
The trust is hoping to distribute scholarships by September but that is dependent on the finance from fundraisers, the first of which is a $500 a ticket banquet on the lawns of Government House in June from which $75 000 is hoped to be raised.
Sir Elliott pointed out that he and his wife Loretta Lady Belgrave strongly believed in the ability of education to change lives for the better.
“We are excited by the opportunities these scholarships will provide for continued national development, and look forward to the support of all Barbadians . . . . All financial contributions will be welcomed and will be greatly received and greatly applied to the purposed for which they are subscribed. My philosophy is that it does not matter where you come from, you can all do great things once you put your minds to it,” he said. (AC)
