DOUBLE CROWN champions UWI Signia Blackbirds ‘A’ began their defence of the Division 1 league netball crown with an easy 59-31 win over Barbados Under-21 on Friday night at the Netball Stadium.

The 18-goal margin did not accurately sum up the disparity between the teams, as it was only in the final two quarters that the Under-21s were able to break the vice grip of defenders Shanice Rock and Shanice Wharton in the shooting circle.

The Under-21s got some respite when UWI goal shooter Shonica Wharton went down after being sandwiched between two defenders and limped off of the court in the third quarter. Up to that stage Wharton had scored 28 of her 29 shots.

Ironically, Blackbird’s Sheniqua Thomas, who will captain the Under 21-team to Botswana, was on fire from long distance, scoring 22 gems from 28 shots alternately as goal attack and goal shooter.
