DON’T ALLOW AUTISM to become a political debate or a finger-pointing, screaming match.
Rather, take a deep breath, roll up your sleeves and get busy fixing the problem.
That is the advice of visiting specialist paediatrician Dr Julie Buckley, in the wake of news that school placements requests for children with autism-like characteristics in Barbados had increased more than 300 per cent from 15 years ago.
“What I have also been seeing . . . is an explosion in acknowledgement that there is an epidemic of autism in Barbados. While it is good to see people seeking assistance, it must be deeply concerning for the community that needs to provide care for them,” she said.(WILLCOMM)
