BARBADOS’ top-rated world-class player Ronald “Suki” King has made a rousing start in defending the Masters division in the Henderson Layne Memorial tournament.

King out-foxed promising Mark Barnett 2-0 and then devoured Hascol Trotman in similar fashion to lead with eight points at the Christ Church Girl’s School on Sunday.

With success were surprises. Barnett bounced back to defeat Nathaniel “Thani” Grosvenor 1-0 after he was offered a draw while Trotman also rebounded with an even more surprising 2-0 defeat of the veteran Grosvenor.

Glyne Howell also pulled off an upset of sorts with a 1-0 lesson for the veteran Mike Barker.

A win and a draw for Jeffrey “Socks” Clarke put him on five points and behind King. Richard Grazette, Glyne Howell, Jack Francis, and Junior Walrond also have five points. Trotman, Hallam Hope, Sam Marshall, Ian Callender and Rawle “Schoolboy” Williams, winner of the recent in-house tournament at Lodge Road are on four points from two draws.

Anderson “Yammi” Hunte made a brilliant start with stunning 2-0 victories over Edward Moore and Everton Wiggins in the Majors division. Newcomer Ryan “Most Improved” Eustace was the other 2-0 winner, over Bertram Alleyne, while the two women, Wynell Neverson and Wilma Branch played to a draw. (HH)
