TROY STANFORD will have to complete his 18-year sentence at Dodds Prison, after the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) dismissed his appeal of a ruling by Barbados’ Court of Appeal.
Stanford had been charged with the murder of Matthew Joseph in 2008, and in June 2011 jurors found him guilty of manslaughter. He was sentenced by Justice Elneth Kentish to 18 years in prison.
His appeal to the CCJ contended that at his trial the judge had an obligation to direct the jury on any defence which arose on the evidence and that on the facts of his case, ought to have directed the jury on self-defence.
“We are not persuaded that the trial judge so erred. We therefore dismiss the appeal and affirm the decision of the Court of Appeal,” the CCJ wrote in yesterday’s decision. (BA)
