MAVIS BECKLES: Good food comes first

IT IS SO hard tuh stay positive nowadays when ya look at some o’ the foolishness that ya does see big people, especially men, doing. This might sound foolish, right? But if ya doan laugh, even though it got ya vex as hell, ya would cry. Believe me.

Tell me something: what is wrong wid some o’ these so-called adults? These big hard-back men who cahn seem tuh resolve duh differences wid-out cussing at the top o’ duh voices and carrying on in the worst way and ending up fighting like two dogs in the road? I cahn understand if duh doan stop tuh think ’bout duh children and family; it like it doan matter tuh dem.

Only last month, I see two big-able men, ZR van drivers, in the road out there by the University of the West Indies, fighting and carrying on like two big idiots and evahbody passing and looking at dem. It was sickening, tuh say the least.

Now this week I read in the court section o’ the newspaper ’bout two coconut vendors pon the highway, fighting, pelting rocks and even cutting up one another. Wha’ happen tuh dem, though? Duh does fight at the slightest thing and duh ain’t only fighting, duh cussing stink and loud fuh the world tuh hear. They doan seem tuh have any kind o’ regard fuh nuhbody. Ya mean big men cahn sort out duh differences wid-out fighting? And some o’ these men got children, ya know? So you understand why the children so. Wha’ monkey see, monkey do.

Talking ’bout monkey, soon from now we gine have tuh be doing just like dem – hunting all ’bout fuh something good tuh eat, feeding off the land and if we doan get wise and plant it up, we gine be in big trouble. People does laugh at me when I say dat soon from now we gine got tuh eat grass or bush. It ain’t only the cost o’ living but every other day somebody does put something pon the social media showing ya or talking ’bout what people putting in the foods ya eating. Whenevah I see anything so coming up, I doan wait nor stay, I does delete it a hurry. I hate tuh see it.

If it ain’t people grinding up plastic tuh make rice, duh grinding up mice or rats. Then the other day a friend o’ mine send me a video of people taking li’l chickens, injecting dem and blowing dem up tuh almost double the size. Then there was another one talking ’bout how the meat people, instead o’ throwing ’way the old meat dat turning dark, they would take it, mix it in wid some good one, grind it up, mix it all together and put the mince meat back out pon the shelf. You could only imagine how many times dem mussee do dat, especially in the poorer countries. Then duh injecting the red meat tuh make it look pretty and attractive.

Look, people doing a whole lot o’ ignorance nowadays; it turning ya stomach. The other day it was the rice, then the cabbage, then the baby carrots and the chemicals duh put dem through tuh keep dem sweet and maintain the colour.

One time it was the tuna and now it is the corn beef. Lord have mercy! I ain’t know wha’ next duh gine do and fuh what reason. The world could produce enough food tuh feed evahbody but people are just greedy, covetous and would seem tuh go tuh any length tuh get money, even kill out other people. It is very sad.

As far as I am concerned, when I go in tuh the supermarket, I gine be very selective wid the things I put in my trolley. I making sure I read evah single label and the parts dat I cahn understand because the print too fine, I gine make sure I walk wid my li’l magnifying glass so I could read it. I have tuh know wha’ going in my stomach.

Furthermore, I gine continue tuh buy my vegetables in the market as I normally do when the Saturday morning come. Well, I does always go in the different markets fuh muh fresh fish and on top o’ dat, if and when I feel like eating meat, I gine in the market fuh dat too. I ain’t trusting the supermarkets nuh more.
