BARBADOS went down twice in the second round of the FIH Men’s Hockey World League in Trinidad.
The Tridents narrowly lost to Chile 2-1 in Saturday’s opening match at the National Hockey Centre in Tacarigua before being drubbed 7-1 by the United States the following day.
In the first match, Barbados started out of synch and could not progress the ball beyond their own half. In the moments that they did, the forwards and midfielders were unable to keep possession and create opportunities.
Chile quickly capitalised on this and scored in the tenth minute through Diego Ordonez.
The Bajans came out a different team in the third quarter, and consistently applied pressure to the Chilean defence, earning a penalty corner in the 42nd minute that was converted by Akeem Rudder.
However, a defensive blunder by defender Marlon Daniel created an opportunity for Ricardo Achondo, who forced an error from Barbados’ captain and goalkeeper Andre Boyce to send Chile up 2-1 in the 46th minute.
United States looked vulnerable in a 4-2 defeat against Canada but had their own way against Barbados.
The Americans netted in the tenth and 11th minutes, while Barbados got a consolation in the 53rd minute through Che Warner. (PR)
