THE BARBADOS ROAD Safety Association (BRSA) held the first in a series of protests this morning to bring awareness to issues contributing to deaths and accidents on our roads.
President Sharmane Roland-Bowen (below) and a small group carrying placards marched outside Foursquare Rum factory in St Philip where a rum-tasting event was underway as part of the Sugar and Rum Festival. 
“We are standing up for safety on our roads. There is too much wrong happening on our roads, too many things that are being swept under the carpet and too many things that people are turning a blind eye to. All the while lives are being lost on our roads,” Roland-Bowen said.
The president lamented the lack of breathalyser legislation and the sale of alcohol to minors.
The placards highlighted the story on the roads this year where there have been 12 fatalities.
“Don’t sell alcohol to minors”, “12 dead and nothing said”, “Alcohol might be legal but it’s still a drug,” some of them read.
Roland-Bowen said more protests will be made at other distilleries on the island, as well as at the offices of the Barbados Tourism Product Authority.
This is another step in a series of moves by BRSA to highlight the dangers on Barbadian roads. In January, they placed fluorescent flag in potholes to highlight the hazards for drivers. (SAT)
