GOVERNMENT HAS SET aside $6 million to fund CARIFESTA, to be hosted in Barbados in August.

Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley made the disclosure yesterday in the House of Assembly as he contributed to debate on the Estimates Of Revenue And Expenditure 2017.

He said while some people questioned the country’s ability to host the regional cultural arts festival during such a tough economic time, he was convinced it would be money well spent.

The Christ Church West Central MP said some 3 000 artistes were expected to attend CARIFESTA from 15 countries, while interest had been generated in the United States, Canada, Brazil and Cuba.

He explained that the CARIFESTA secretariat was already established at Sky Mall in Haggatt Hall, St Michael, with a logo and jingle created, while the website had gone live. (GE)
