Sonics shoot down Hawks

THEY WEREN’T exactly super but Sonics proved more than powerful enough.

Charles Vanderpool had eight points in the fourth quarter as part of a decisive 20-5 run to power Urban Vybz St John’s Sonics to Thursday’s season-opening 82-70 win over Co-operators General Insurance Premier League basketball newbies Hawks.

It wasn’t the statement most expected from the new superpowers, especially against an undersized Hawks team making its top flight debut at the Barbados Community College.

But St John’s did have bouts of brilliance, particularly down the stretch of the fourth, where they literally overpowered their smaller opponents.

Clinging to a 60-55 lead, Sonics pounded everything in the paint after using the high-low between MVP Akeem Marsh and the newly-acquired Vanderpool to good effect.
