Those peOPLE who believe that lightning does not strike twice in the same place had better keep away from the bond at Kensington when Queen’s College boys and Harrison College girls are playing in a Massy Stores volleyball finals.
Some weeks after winning the league crown, HC and QC returned on Monday to again meet and defeat Christ Church Foundation girls and St Leonard’s Boys’, respectively, in the knockout finals.
The double crown champions did not drop a set in rolling over their opponents. However, some similarities occurred in the two finals, with both Foundation and St Leonard’s taking the early advantage in the first set before losing at the same scores.
Although Foundation started without junior national Aaliyah Durant, who arrived late in the first set, they were up 18-14 and looked likely of taking that first set.
However, league and knockout MVP Ashley Jordan led HC, along with solid contributions from Donnique Alleyne, Janiah Drakes, Abigail Bryan and Mya Leacock, to take the match 25-23, 25-19.
Junior Barbados captain Jordan controlled the back court and hit the ball with frightening force and skill to disturb a hesitant Foundation defence, which did itself little favour by being blown six times for positional faults.
QC seemed keen to hand St Leonard’s the advantage by serving away three times before the score had reached 10. However, with a line-up boasting the Callender twins Chad and Brandon, along with Akiel Stoute, who compete in Division 1, QC took charge of the match to win 25-23, 25-19.
Stoute claimed the MVP award for the knockout, while setter Chad was the league’s MVP. Jordan predictably took both MVP titles among the girls. (KB)
