WHETHER the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) will insist on a ten per cent increase in wages for employees at the financially ailing Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) depends on the restoring of the parliamentarians’ pay cut.
BWU general secretary Toni Moore said the organisation would take its cue from that issue as it geared up for further negotiations with CBC after the television station flat out said it could not afford a ten per cent across-the-board increase.
“So whether the union will forge ahead by asking for increases or not will, of course, be determined by how committed others are – those who have to set the example – in forging ahead to make sure that they are restored,” she said.
Moore was referring to last month’s approval by the House of Assembly of the Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries (Remunerations And Allowances Of Members) Order, 2016 which will see the ministers, MPs, senators and other designated political appointees under Government getting back the ten per cent of their salaries cut three years ago when the country was enduring a tough economic period.
