THE state broadcasting company may be considering a series of temporary layoffs as it scrambles to pull itself out of a black hole of debt.
Management of the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was huddled in a meeting yesterday when a fresh episode of sickness hit the Pine, St Michael entity and left it searching to find stand-ins for the Mornin’ Barbados TV show.
One of the proposals coming out of the meeting would be to cut managers’ salaries by ten per cent and temporarily lay off at least 25 workers every ten weeks to cut down on the $1.6 million monthly wage bill.
The money-strapped CBC has been in pay negotiations with the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), which sources said was asking for an across the board increase of ten per cent. However, the last meeting ended abruptly when the state-run agency declared it had no money to meet the high demand. (AC)
