IT WAS a “quiet” Marion Murrell who hosted Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave on her 100th birthday yesterday.
Resplendent in a green dress with a complementing hat, the mother of five children, four of whom joined her for the occasion along with nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, was the toast of the Layne’s Road, Clapham, St Michael community.
The last of Murrell’s five children, Hilary Murrell, who served as the host, described his mother as a quiet woman but one who was also a disciplinarian.
He said the former agricultural worker at Wildey Plantation and domestic was dubbed “Minister of Peace and Quiet because she never got into conflict with people”.
“She was a very hard worker. She worked on the plantation for many years. Even when she retired, she worked as a domestic and also found time to help family members and friends who needed assistance,” Hilary said.
He added that his mother had been, until recently, able to attend church, but an injury to her leg had confined her to a wheelchair. Her memory was good as were her other faculties, he said, adding she currently lived with another son, Oscar, who was also her caregiver. (HLE)
