On mission for granddad

ALL EYES WERE on St James Parish Church as it celebrated its harvest over the weekend, but it stoked some long-held desires of a St Michael woman.

That church is central to Lana Clarke and her family’s history, and she is on a mission to ensure that the contribution of her maternal grandfather, Kenneth “Ken” Beckles, is immortalised.

In fact, Clarke said her uncle Martin still worshipped there, and his remaining siblings still recognised St James as their church.

“He does unofficial sexton duties. He’s a server, Eucharistic minister, everything. He does everything in the church.”

The oldest grandchild of Ken and Joyce Beckles has a long list of anecdotes from her mother and uncles about growing up in the graveyard of the church.
