MANILA – From Marabou feathers to bejewelled bikinis and pineapple headdresses, it looked like a scene straight from the Rio Carnival.

The Miss Universe catwalk was a riot of colour and pageantry this evening as hopefuls posed in “national costume” for the preliminary stages of the competition.

More than 86 women from all over the world are now in Manila competing in the Miss Universe beauty contest that will culminate in a coronation in the Philippines capital this weekend.

Barbados’ own Shannon Harris has been proudly wearing her Barbados sash at the various events already staged.

Harris has been busy posting pictures from the pageant and updating her local supporters on her Instagram page.

She recently wrote: “Thank you to everyone who has gotten me where I am today. I am so grateful and so blessed to have amazing people around me at all times. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.”

Natasha Morgan, director of Crown Events Inc. Miss Universe Barbados, said: “We are beyond proud of Shannon. She has worked very hard and has acquitted herself extremely well throughout the course of the competition. We are confident that she has done and will continue to do her best and that is truly all we could ever ask of her. It is in the judges’ hands now.”

Morgan also thanked the public for the outpouring of love and support for Harris. (Daily Mail)
