Suckoo: Jobless numbers falling

MINISTER OF LABOUR Dr Esther Byer Suckoo is singing Government’s praises about the reduction in unemployment.

She is also hoping that the number of jobless people – around 13 000 – also decreases in the near future.

The acting Leader of Public Business in the Senate gave the thumbs up to the Freundel Stuart administration for reducing unemployment levels to a current 10.2 per cent, as she led off debate on the Holidays With Pay (Amendment) Bill yesterday.

“We have seen an improvement in employment. When the recession started in 2008, we saw our unemployment figures rise to around 13 per cent. We know the ramifications of high unemployment, and we have been working to try to contain it. But no one anticipated the recession would have lasted as long as it did,” she said. (BA)
