Knives the No.1 weapon

THE USE OF FIREARMS accounted for almost half of the murders in Barbados between 2009 and 2013, but in recent times, knives have again become the weapon of choice in disputes in Barbados, an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) 2016 report has revealed.

But for the IDB, domestic violence against women remains a worrisome trend.

The report, Crime And Violence In Barbados, was presented in June last year, and took a look at a number of variants which show the trends of criminality in Barbados, using statistics provided by the Royal Barbados Police Force.

In addition, the report reveals that since 2009 men between 26 and 35 years old are more likely to become murder victims in Barbados, with disputes remaining the main motive that leads to the killings. The report also reveals that very young men are finding themselves on the wrong side of the law, with perpetrators of murders usually between the age of 18 and 25. (BA)
