A NOTED ECONOMIST has blasted “lazy” large sugar plantation owners for the state of the island’s sugar industry.
But, Sir Frank Alleyne conceded there needs to be more communication between farmers and Government if the sector is to move forward.
His comments came while delivering the Democratic Labour Party’s weekly lunchtime lecture at the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) headquarters at George Street, yesterday.
He noted the island was currently selling sugar at a “tremendous loss”. According to him, it took $6 900 to produce one tonne of sugar which was then sold at $1 100 on the United Kingdom market.
