SMJ seeking right sugar balance

AT LEAST ONE soft drink manufacturer in Barbados is willing to put its money and resources into research that could lead to a significant reduction in the amount of sugar in its beverages available here.

SMJ Beverages, the bottlers of the Busta and Chubby line of soft drinks, has started laboratory testing overseas to determine if soft drinks with 50 per cent less sugar than their current products would be palatable to Barbadians.

Last week the SUNDAY SUN revealed that most locally produced soft drinks carried twice as much added sugar as those of international brands in the United Kingdom.

“We are testing a 50 per cent reduced sugar content Chubby in our regional markets right now,” general manager of SMJ, McArthur Barrow, told the SUNDAY SUN. (BA)
