Lacklustre start to Premier League

FIRST APPEARANCES count and usually have a lasting impression.

But four rusty teams, tired players, missed chances, a controversial penalty, 11 bookings, lack of midfield creativity all combined in an inauspicious start to the new Barbados Football Association’s 2017 Digicel Premier League season on Sunday night.

The large AstroTurf at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex didn’t help some of the unfit players’ cause during the double-header as it appeared teams were short on preparation.

Four-time top-flight league champs Paradise, the only established Premiership club on show, scraped a 1-0 victory over plucky new boys Home Improvement Hardware and Supplies Waterford Compton on a fortuitous late 82nd minute goal by 17-year-old winger Ackeel Applewhaite. (EZS)
