Welfare Department’s tight squeeze

THE WELFARE Department’s headquarters on Roebuck Street is bursting at the seams, not only with clients but with staff.

Located at the Weymouth Corporate Centre, the department, which provides social services to the poor and needy, is not only servicing the entire St Michael corridor but is also being occupied by staff providing services to St Thomas and Christ Church.

An official told the SUNDAY SUN that the situation had become untenable.

“It is cramped and overcrowded,” the source said, pointing out that welfare officers were squeezed into small cubicles. “There should be a welfare office in every parish in Barbados but the one which was located at Oistins, Christ Church, has been closed for about seven years and the St Thomas staff which operated out of Warrens Polyclinic were forced to move into Roebuck Street last year because of issues with asbestos.
