Another road safety tip for the list

IN AN EFFORT to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents, a leading insurance company has recently published a list of ten tips.

While the initiative is to be highly commended, I am most surprised that one of the very bad habits causing significant collisions was not on the list.

Motorists approaching roundabouts intending to continue straight often switch from the left and proper side to the right side.

There is no need to move from the left to the right if the intention is to keep straight.

It makes good sense for motorists to move to the right if the intention at the roundabout is to make a right turn.

If the intention is to go straight, then why not continue on the left side of the roadway entering and exiting the roundabout ?

On approaching the roundabout, moving over to the right side, then to continue straight has resulted in avoidable accidents.

This matter should have been addressed a long time ago by the relevant authorities, but is an ongoing issue creating unnecessary problems for the insured as well as insurers.

The Barbados Road Safety committee, the Royal Barbados Police Force, the Ministry of Transport and Works and  representatives of the insurance association have a responsibility to resolve this matter sooner rather than later.
