THE MINISTRY OF Transport and Works says it will be stepping up its islandwide emergency road works programme from January 9 in an effort to repair numerous potholes.
In a release issued today, the Ministry said its patching programme was continuous but the heavy rains experienced in November and early December aggravated the problem.
The Ministry pointed out that heavy flooding occurred in some areas where it did not usually occur.
“The Ministry will be placing all its available equipment at the disposable of the patching programme over a six-week period to ensure that the pothole problem is rectified.
“In order for the road repairs to be undertaken in a timely manner the Ministry will be utilising the services of contractors who already have asphalt plants and contracts with the Ministry to supply and lay asphalt. These firms are C.O. Williams Construction, Brathwaite Construction and Rayside Construction Limited,” the release stated.
The programme will commence on the main roads and then move to secondary and residential roads.
Government will also be clearing watercourses, drains and culverts to mitigate flooding and the Ministry will be milling and paving a number of roads. The latter began two months ago at Whitepark Road, St Michael and Thorpe’s, St James and will include the rehabilitation of roads in every parish.
Other roads in the mill and pave project include Rise ‘N’ Sun, Callender’s to Thornbury Hill, Top Rock to Oistins, St Patrick’s Roundabout to Charnocks and Yorkshire in Christ Church; Walkers and Boarded Hall Tenantries Numbers 1 and 2 in St George; Bay Street, Codrington Road and Lodge Hill to Well Gap in St Michael; Norwood Cross Road and Chapel Gap Numbers 1 and 2 in St James; Babylon and Belleplaine Main Road in St Andrew; Well Road to St Clements’s and Carb Hill to Archer’s Bay in St Lucy; Vaucluse Main Road and Shop Hill to Content in St Thomas; Sugar Hill and Lammings in St Joseph; Ocean City, Gemswick and Sealy Hill to St Catherine’s Church in St Philip; and Gall Hill Numbers 1 and 2 in St John.
