Worrell advised to meet press

BARBADOS’ CENTRAL BANK Governor has been told it’s time to hold a real press conference.

As the bank’s team led by Governor Dr DeLisle Worrell prepares to present Barbados’ economic report card for 2016, a former top Barbadian banker and minister in the Ministry of Finance in Trinidad and Tobago, Mariano Browne, (below) has slammed Worrell for not opening himself to questioning from members of the media for more than two years. marianobrowne

The Central Bank boss has not held a press conference since the first quarter of 2014, choosing instead to hand-pick people to engage in Central Bank-created events for television and press statements.

Browne, a former chief executive officer of Butterfield Bank, told the DAILY NATION: “It is highly unusual for a central bank in such difficult economic times, responsible as it is and having inputs into both monetary and fiscal policies, not to explain [the] positions and the policy measures that are being adopted under his watch.
