AN ALMOST HOUR-LONG meeting between the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) and management of Grantley Adams International Airport Inc. (GAIA) over a pay increase for airport workers has been described as “positive”.
After emerging from the meeting at GAIA’s corporate offices yesterday afternoon, NUPW general secretary Roslyn Smith was keeping the outcome close to her chest.
Pressed for details, Smith said: “We are happy so far with the way things have gone and it will be unfair to go public before we deal with our membership in terms of acceptance or non-acceptance of our proposals,” Smith said.
The union is seeking a six per cent increase, a demand that dates back to last year. Workers have taken industrial action to press their case, including a recent go-slow.
NUPW president Akanni McDowall and treasurer Asokore Beckles, along with shop steward and guard at the airport Tracey Parris-Beckles, met with GAIA officials, including its chief executive officer.
Parris-Beckles said: “The meeting went very well. I am pleased with the outcome but unfortunately I cannot say anything more than that.”
The NUPW is expected to meet with its members at 10:30 a.m. today. (LK)
