IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN long overdue, but yesterday the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) finally got around to rewarding one of its own and one of the island’s greatest trade unionists.
The BWU’s Labour College in Mangrove, St Philip, was renamed the Frank Walcott Labour College, after former general secretary Sir Frank Walcott, during an official ceremony yesterday.
With his widow Lady Walcott in attendance, several other dignitaries, including Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, former general secretary Sir Roy Trotman, current general secretary Toni Moore, National Union of Public Workers president Akanni McDowall and general secretary Roslyn Smith, were there for the historic moment.
In his remarks, Sir Roy revealed that shortly after Sir Frank’s death in 1999, the BWU had suggested that the Labour College be named in his honour. (RB)
