THE BARBADOS Workers Union (BWU) is putting the construction industry in Barbados on notice, according to deputy general secretary Dwaine Paul.
He made the point following an impromptu meeting on Tuesday with around 20 workers of the Black Bess Group at union headquarters, Solidarity House.
“There were some issues raised within the Black Bess Group and we met with workers to hear them. The BWU remains very concerned that the state of affairs in the construction sector, whether involving locals or CARICOM nationals, [is] not what we would expect and the standards we have set for workers are being eroded to the detriment of us all.
“The union will be working diligently and when necessary, or if forced, will be making these issues public,” he said.
Paul said some of the issues raised by the workers had already been resolved and the others “we will treat to in short order”, adding there was no work stoppage as the workers met with the union after working hours. He also said the matter should not lead to any industrial action “at this time”.
Last week Monday, work at a number of construction sites operated by Infra Inc. was interrupted when a group of machine operators staged a small protest at its Black Bess, St Peter office, citing unfair treatment concerning the apparent withholding of payment. (CA)
