CHRISTMAS CHEER came early to 2000 needy Barbadians today, when the Salvation Army hosted its annual Christmas Hamper Distribution programme.
Happy faces greeted Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave at the Army’s Reed Street headquarters when he arrived this morning for the annual gesture.
He distributed hampers to some of the 800 people gathered at that centre, while around the island, another 1 200 hampers were given out at other Salvation Army Corps.
Divisional Commander Major Sinous Theodore said more and more people were turning to the Salvation Army for assistance.
This prompted Sir Elliott and chairman of the Army’s Advisory Board Paul Bernstein to appeal to Barbadians to increase financial support to the organisation which runs several different welfare programmes for the needy.
The Royal Barbados Police Force Band added a festive note, playing a selection of favourite Christmas carols, while the entire hall sang along. (GC)
