THE SAND being deposited near ADM Barbados Mills Limited off Spring Garden Highway is not connected to legal issues involving Rock Hard Cement Limited in any way, said Barbados Port Inc. chief executive officer David Jean-Marie.
He told the DAILY NATION the sand was placed there from the dredging work at the Careenage and that the port was well within its rights to deposit it there.
“We are dredging the Careenage and the sand is being stockpiled there by the Flour Mill site. It is port land and we are using it. It has nothing to do with [hampering] Rock Hard Cement,” he said.
Jean-Marie said the dredging had been going on for some time and would be complete “within a week or two”.
The port is dealing with a potentially dangerous build-up of sand near the mouth of the Careenage that had been creating problems for boats entering and exiting the area.
Harbour master Richard Alleyne said if left unchecked, the build-up would eventually choke off the Careenage and negatively impact pleasure craft business. (CA)
