Barbados ‘a leader’

GUYANA’S PRESIDENT David Granger has reminded Barbados of its pivotal role in building a strong Caribbean community.

Granger, here for celebrations marking the island’s 50th anniversary of Independence, said yesterday: “I see Barbados as central to Caribbean unity. Barbados has been a bulwark . . . . I just wish that all Barbadians would understand the centrality of Barbados to the Caribbean project.”

The President noted that National Hero Errol Barrow had started the process, having been one of the founding fathers of the Caribbean Community. He praised Prime Minister Freundel Stuart for continuing the trend set by Barrow.

In a wide-ranging interview at Hilton Barbados, Granger said Stuart “has done a lot for the Caribbean”. (GC)
