Sir Hilary: Time for fresh guard

AS BARBADOS CELEBRATES 50 years of Independence, one of its most respected academics is advising that the current model for development has become obsolete.

The assessment from Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Sir Hilary Beckles, came a day after former Prime Minister Owen Arthur expressed a similar view.

Delivering the final lecture in an 11-part series to commemorate the country’s Independence, the Barbadian historian said on Thursday night that the country needs to shift focus from the current “race-based model” to one that embraces the masses, a termed he described as a “political movement of the excluded”.

“King Cuffee’s stool was burnt, General Bussa’s horse was tamed, skipper Barrow’s plan has crashed. Fifty years later the unjust society remains. The just nation that near 3 000 of our ancestors fought for has not yet been realised and yet I believe . . . that as Barbados was the most unjust society in this hemisphere we must continue our efforts to make sure that Barbados becomes the most just society in the next 50 years,” he said. (WILLCOMM)
