OVER 700 members of Alexandra School took to the streets of Speightstown, St Peter, painting the community blue and gold yesterday as part of Barbados’ 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations.
Residents took up every vantage point to soak up the parade despite the threat of showers.
The contingent made its way from the front gates of the Queen Street school, behind a truck that blasted Bajan music, to Major Walk and along the Speightstown ByPass Road.
Teacher Dawn Alleyne said their intention, aside from showing their patriotism, was to prove to people that the area was pretty much alive.
“This is very important to us because someone said that it seemed as though Speightstown didn’t know that [Barbados] was celebrating 50 years.
“We thought that this was a way for Speightstown to realise that they are a part and that they matter. We really want to see Speightstown come alive again.”
The students also gave back to the community by making donations to 50 people, including police officers from the District “E” Station. (MR)
