SCORES OF UNIVERSITY of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus students took to the streets on Saturday to protest gun violence.
The march was organised by UWISTAT, the Vice Chancellor’s Ambassadors Corps, and its president, Simone Delzin, said the event was a march against gun violence associated with young people.
“It was not only to stand up against violence but to encourage other youth throughout the Caribbean to know there is another way besides turning to guns. I think a lot of youth turn to guns because they think there is no other option or they think of it as just self-defence.
“They see it as a necessary evil. They see it as something they have to do to put food on the table for their families, and as university students we can stand up and say ‘no you don’t have to do that. That is not the only way of defending yourself’,” she said.
The marchers, led by a tuk band, marched from UWI, along Black Rock Main Road, through Free Hill, Black Rock and back to the Cave Hill Campus. This was the first march of its kind.
Delzin said she was pleased with the turnout and the marchers were energetic and vociferous with the chants. (HLE)
