THE STATE OF the Constitution River Van Stand in Bridgetown presents a clear and present danger to thousands of commuters every day and corrective action cannot be delayed any longer.

This was made clear yesterday by Minister of Transport and Works Michael Lashley, who said there was even evidence that a number of the makeshift stalls in the terminal were being used as sleeping quarters by some individuals.

“The risk is too great and we cannot wait for something horrible to happen,” the minister told the DAILY NATION, while revealing that later this week, his ministry would reveal plans for Phase 2 of a project to transform the facility that was recently condemned as a health hazard by the Ministry of Health.

Underscoring the importance of urgent action, chairman of the Transport Authority Alex Linton revealed that between 8 000 and 10 000 commuters boarded or disembarked from minibuses and route taxis there every day. (RRM)
