River Stand a health hazard

A LACK OF ADEQUATE water facilities and the possibility of the spread of disease were the concerns that caused the Ministry of Health to condemn the River Van Stand in Bridgetown.

Principal environmental health officer Basil Pilgrim, in a special report to the Ministry of Transport and Works last year, cited the dearth of water facilities available to thousands of commuters who used the facility on a daily basis, as well as the possibility of water-borne diseases being spread.

“There is an inadequate supply of potable water to some of the food stalls,” the health official wrote. “This is due to the stalls that are constructed on the boarding pavement adjacent to the Ministry of Education having BWA (Barbados Water Authority) connections, while those adjacent to the Constitution River and the centre, do not.

“There are no provisions for connection for these stalls. Some vendors using buckets with taps claim they bring their water from home rather than collecting the water from the toilet facilities provided. However, this claim is difficult to assess,” Pilgrim said in his report. (BA)
