SOCIAL SCENE: Meet and greet at UN

United Nations (UN) Women executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka was recently in Barbados and seized the opportunity to meet Barbadian women leaders from various sectors.

It was her first official visit to the Caribbean, and Mlambo-Ngcuka, who is also an under-secretary general of the UN, took time out to address women, update them on issues that were occupying her attention, and to socialise with them afterwards at a cocktail reception at the Hilton Barbados Resort after a hectic day of meetings in Barbados. 

The UN executive also got a sample of Barbadian entertainment as three high-profile local artistes performed Step Up For Gender Equality in support of UN Women’s Call for action.

It was a light-hearted evening that also allowed the “sisters” to hear powerful messages as artiste TC sang Sisters Of The Caribbean while poet Adisa AJA Andwele delivered his classic Woman and Michael Mikey Mercer moved the audience with a rendition of Love Is The Answer. (GC)
