Govt aims to cut travel cost

GOVERNMENT is moving to introduce technology that could reduce the amount of time and money spent by officials on travelling to meetings overseas.

Minister of Labour and Human Resource Development Dr Esther Byer Suckoo said her ministry had taken the lead on developing a knowledge management system for the public sector, and had also been partnering with the private sector.

That system, she suggested, would reduce some of the negative effects of the paper-based system and cut down the time spent in traffic by sometimes holding virtual meetings.

“We do a lot of travelling for regional meetings and we want to be able to eliminate as much of that as possible. So we have the infrastructure in place, there’s training and people now have to become comfortable with using the system. That’s another challenge because that involves changing mindsets,” she said.
