‘Hike’ bad habits tax

IF A PROMINENT medical practitioner has his way, lovers of sweet drinks and tobacco will have to pay more in taxes to “enjoy” these vices.

Senator Professor Emeritus Sir Henry Fraser said he believed this was the most significant way to incentivise Barbadiansto change their habits.

Those habits, he told a large group at the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Cave Hill Campus on Tuesday night, were causing tragedies, and bankrupting families and the Government.

Delivering the final lecture in the series hosted by the Faculty of Medical Sciences in recognition of Barbados’ 50 anniversary of Independence, Sir Henry argued that the current ten per cent levy applied on sugary drinks and cigarettes, for example, was not enough. (SDB Media)
