CARLISLE BAY was dotted with blue and yellow swim caps yesterday as 192 locals and tourists converged for the climax of the Barbados Open Water Festival.
Organiser of the event, Zarry Evelyn, said he did not think any local swimmers would win the race, but he was confident that there is a lot of talent on the island that could be shaped.
“We have some talented swimmers from Barbados, but as far as winning either event that would be not in reach this year. We’re trying to groom local swimmers to get to that point. We had some local swimmers do very well [Saturday]; Nkosi Dunwoody came third as he was beaten out by two world champions,” Evelyn said.
Despite the hot and humid conditions, former US Olympic swimmer Alex Myer copped the gold medal in the 5K race, finishing in one hour and one minute. He was closely followed by UK Olympian Benjamin Procter in 1:03, and 14-year-old Nkosi Dunwoody in 1:04. (RA)
