Domestic cases persist despite amended laws

INCIDENTS OF DOMESTIC violence in Barbados are on the rise despite multi-pronged efforts to arrest the problem.

Police logged 435 reports of domestic violence cases between January 1 and October 31 this year, a slight increase over last year’s 429.

Agencies working with the problem are concerned that despite their efforts and recently amended domestic violence legislation, the scourge persists.

These latest figures have also led director of the Bureau of Gender Affairs, Patricia Hackett-Codrington, to remind Barbadians that  domestic violence-related deaths are a reality in Barbados and should not be “scoffed at”. (GC)
