Blackout hits QEH

IT WAS LIGHTS out in key areas at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) yesterday, as the island’s main medical institution was plunged into darkness for five hours due to a major internal power failure.

The electrical malfunction caused the postponement of surgeries as well as discharges from the hospital. Staff were also unable to administer medication to patients, among other issues.

A plumbing problem caused water to flood the QEH’s main electrical room, resulting in a power failure to all wards and floors of the main hospital block.

This situation triggered an emergency response plan. Barbados Defence Force (BDF) officers were deployed to help move patients across floors as elevators had failed, leaving patients who needed to be relocated for care effectively stranded.
