THERE WAS the sound of voices in Glendairy Prison again.
But they weren’t the voices of inmates.
They belonged to the hundreds of Barbadians who thronged the historic Station Hill, St Michael facility to get what might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view a building that has been inaccessible to the public for more than 100 years.
Yesterday’s open day at Glendairy Prison, which was built in 1853, was part of the decommissioning of the historic building, removing it from under the control of the Superintendent of Prisons and the Minister of Home Affairs.
The impressive three-storied coral-stoned building with its iconic 72 arches – each one fronting a cell – presented what looked like a freshly scrubbed face to the public yesterday.
