TWO POWER WASHERS and protective facial masks have been donated to the committee of the Oistins Bay Garden Association Inc. by Barbados Labour Party candidate for Christ Church South, Ralph Thorne, to help keep the area clean.

He said the area was too important to the island for him to not seek to address the facility in respect to its conditions.

“There seems to be confusion on which Government department is intended to maintain this area and I felt that we should make a contribution to the stall owners,” Thorne said.

The Oistins Bay Garden is heavily utilised and very popular with tourists and locals on Friday nights.

Thorne also said the stall operators and owners made a significant economic contribution to the island.

Michelle King, owner and operator of Crystal’s Bar for the last 20 years, said she was extremely pleased with the donation considering the concerns about conditions in the area.

“Thanks from the bottom of my heart. Really and truly the people who clean, they do not have the type of equipment that was needed; soap, water with a broom could not do the job. They needed to bring up some of the dirt and lift up the grease,” she said.

Thorne said the equipment was not for an individual stall owner “but for the collective benefit of everyone and would be in the care of the committee that runs the Bay Garden, who would be responsible for the use and maintenance”.

Even though he refused to give a cost for the equipment, the Queen’s Counsel said the machines were of top quality and the investment was sizeable. (LK)
